Whitespace: The Secret Ingredient to a Great Looking Website

Having a website that looks good is important if you want to create a strong impact on the online community. Website designers know this. This should also be a primary concern of website owners. Therefore, it is essential to focus on elements that help make websites pleasing and user-friendly – elements like whitespace.

What is Whitespace?

Majority of website owners do not really know what a whitespace is. And if they do, they have no idea just how important it is for their website especially in terms of layout.

Whitespace is the space or portion between screen elements. In simpler terms, whitespace refers to that area where there is absence of text and/or graphics. This space is normally left untouched so that a webpage comes out smooth, organized and elegant. Often known as “negative space”, this portion does not necessarily have to be white – it can be colored or textured. As long as it is free of elements (whether text, images, or graphics – it doesn’t matter), it is a whitespace.

Why Does Whitespace Matter?

Website designers know that whitespace is the key to having a great and user-friendly website. Here are reasons why:

  1. Whitespace means better legibility and readability.

Whitespace make websites easier on the eyes. In other words, it is more legible and more readable. While it is true that choosing the right font style, font size and color, text structure, and other similar elements, whitespace plays an important role because it determines the way the elements are arranged. For example, if the paragraphs are aligned, they will look more organized and, therefore, easier to read. If there are spaces in between paragraphs, the page will look lighter. If paragraphs are not separated by whitespace, they will look like tombstones. Anything that looks neat and is easy to digest is user-friendly.

If whitespace is properly used, even if a website has a lot of text, the page won’t look too stuffed or crowded.

  2. Whitespace draws attention to the right element.

A perfect example of this is Google’s homepage. It’s just one big white space with the word “Google” and the search box in the middle. The whitespace makes it easy for users to focus their attention towards the “search” function, which is what Google is primarily for.

  3. Whitespace delivers elegance in the simplest way.

It’s true what many people say, simplicity is beauty especially when it comes to website design. And this is precisely what whitespace offers: simplicity that equates to beauty, to elegance and sophistication.

Compare these two webpages: one has a large photo of a girl wearing red dress in the middle of the page. The words “Red for Valentine” are printed below the photo. The other page has the same photo, but it occupies the whole page. The same texts are used, but this time they are placed inside a box above the photo in big, bold letters. Which one looks cluttered? Which one appears simpler but more elegant? The first one, of course! That’s the magic that whitespace can do.

A lot of expensive brands use whitespace in their ads and websites because it conveys balance, style and sophistication.

So, if you’re trying to build a website that creates waves, don’t be afraid to use whitespace. Embrace it. It might be your best weapon yet.
